H2FAsT Evaluation Tool:
Assessing Financial Viability of Hydrogen Projects

The AMETHyST project has created a free and comprehensive tool, H2FAsT, designed to evaluate the financial feasibility of green and low-carbon hydrogen projects.

The aim of the tool is to provide stakeholders and technicians with a Decision Support System (DSS) capable of helping solve practical problems such as the sizing of an electrolyzer and the potential storage of a plant.

DO YOU HAVE CLEAN ENERGY AT YOUR DISPOSAL?
DO YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE BEST WAY TO PRODUCE GREEN HYDROGEN?

H2FAsT is the simulator tool that can help you assess your potential.

Large-scale companies, small businesses and local Alpine communities can also play a key role in launching projects aimed at decarbonizing processes and activities, creating hydrogen ecosystems that target energy self-sufficiency for entire valleys, connecting supply and demand, and developing a complete hydrogen supply chain.

Entrepreneurs, energy companies, public administrations, private individuals—anyone with a photovoltaic, wind, or other renewable energy production facility with excess energy available can enter the world of green hydrogen production.

The tool is designed to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of hydrogen production based on a given amount of renewable energy available without grid support.

Be ready: to run correctly, H2FAsT needs around 30 technical and economic input parameters.

First download the H2FAsT folder package: H2FAsT_SIMULATOR.zip file. In the folder package you will find some useful materials to get your hands on the tool:

After filling in the INPUT files with your data and running the H₂FAsT Simulator in Google Colab you will be able to download an Excel file that will include:

Model runs can be done limitlessly to change and reset variables to build different scenarios.

H2FAsT is a Decision Support System tool. The circumstances under which decisions are taken on setting up a plant to produce green H₂ can vary widely: sometimes only the maximum amount of renewable electricity available is defined, sometimes there may be capital expenditure or H₂ production incentives, and the initial capital available and loan conditions as well as the demand for H₂ can also vary. H2FAsT can support you in assessing these scenarios.

H2FAsT allows the development of simulations by modifying the input variables such as plant costs, loan conditions, potential incentives, etc. and conduct a series of sensitivity analyses between variables chosen by the operator.

Here are some of the most common cases when H2FAsT is really useful and can make the difference:

PRODUCING H2 FROM SURPLUS RENEWABLE ENERGY

You have extra renewable energy available and could use it for green hydrogen production

Use H2FAsT

to identify the optimal electrolyzer and battery configuration that maximizes your investment.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR H2 PRODUCTION

You have already decided to produce and have a maximum available investment set.

Use H2FAsT

to identify the plant solution that maximizes hydrogen production.

TARGETING A YEARLY H2 PRODUCTION

You have set a target level of annual hydrogen production.

Use H2FAsT

to simulate various scenarios and choose the one that minimizes the full production cost.

GETTING NEGATIVE NPV OF A H2 PROJECT

What if a simulation for a project aiming at producing green hydrogen shows a negative Net Present Value (NPV)?

Use H2FAsT

to calculate the minimum selling price or the amount of the potential incentive on the hydrogen produced to ensure a non-negative NPV.

WILLING TO PRODUCE H2 FROM AVAILABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY

You have the possibility to produce energy from renewable sources and use it for green hydrogen production.

Use H2FAsT

to determine the plant architecture that allows minimizing operating costs (OPEX).
