H2FAsT Evaluation Tool:
Assessing Financial Viability of Hydrogen Projects
The AMETHyST project has created a free and comprehensive tool, H2FAsT, designed to evaluate the financial feasibility of green and low-carbon hydrogen projects.
The aim of the tool is to provide stakeholders and technicians with a Decision Support System (DSS) capable of helping solve practical problems such as the sizing of an electrolyzer and the potential storage of a plant.
DO YOU HAVE CLEAN ENERGY AT YOUR DISPOSAL?
DO YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE BEST WAY TO PRODUCE GREEN HYDROGEN?
H2FAsT is the simulator tool that can help you assess your potential.
ARE YOU A TARGET USER?
Large-scale companies, small businesses and local Alpine communities can also play a key role in launching projects aimed at decarbonizing processes and activities, creating hydrogen ecosystems that target energy self-sufficiency for entire valleys, connecting supply and demand, and developing a complete hydrogen supply chain.
Entrepreneurs, energy companies, public administrations, private individuals—anyone with a photovoltaic, wind, or other renewable energy production facility with excess energy available can enter the world of green hydrogen production.
WHY USE H2FAsT?
The tool is designed to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of hydrogen production based on a given amount of renewable energy available without grid support.
WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO USE THE H2FAsT SIMULATOR?
- an internet connection
- a Google account
- and last but not least, renewable energy!
Be ready: to run correctly, H2FAsT needs around 30 technical and economic input parameters.
HOW TO PROCEED WITH THE SIMULATION?
First download the H2FAsT folder package: H2FAsT_SIMULATOR.zip file. In the folder package you will find some useful materials to get your hands on the tool:
-
2 files required to run the simulator – the NOTEBOOK.ipynb & INPUT.xslx
To help you Input files are available in several languages (English, Italian, French German and Slovenian) but the simulation outputs presented by the tool are in English. - a video tutorial
- a pdf guideline document with Step-by-Step Guide to using H2FAsT - these instructions will support you through the various steps in preparing the INPUT file and in running the Simulator.
WHAT WILL YOU BE ABLE TO DEVELOP?
After filling in the INPUT files with your data and running the H₂FAsT Simulator in Google Colab you will be able to download an Excel file that will include:
- a sheet with a general summary table with the key info on the best scenarios identified for producing green hydrogen
- charts illustrating the relationship between key technical and economic parameters
- detailed information about individual scenarios: in these, you will be able to look at year-by-year income statements, cash flows, financial indicators, and energy flows.
Model runs can be done limitlessly to change and reset variables to build different scenarios.
Download simulator file, unzip it and watch the tutorial video and read the guidelines.
Fill the INPUT files with your data and run the H2FAsT Simulator in Google Colab.
Download an Excel file that will include: a general summary table, charts and information about scenarios.
The file contains simulator and guidelines. Tool updated on November 2025 to resolve reported issues.
H2FAsT is a Decision Support System tool. The circumstances under which decisions are taken on setting up a plant to produce green H₂ can vary widely: sometimes only the maximum amount of renewable electricity available is defined, sometimes there may be capital expenditure or H₂ production incentives, and the initial capital available and loan conditions as well as the demand for H₂ can also vary. H2FAsT can support you in assessing these scenarios.
H2FAsT allows the development of simulations by modifying the input variables such as plant costs, loan conditions, potential incentives, etc. and conduct a series of sensitivity analyses between variables chosen by the operator.
