HyPipe Bavaria – H2 Cluster Burghausen

The HyPipe Bavaria – The Hydrogen Hub project lays the foundation for a hydrogen start-up network in Bavaria by 2030, which will be implemented to 95 percent by repurposing existing natural gas pipelines. With approximately 300 kilometres, HyPipe Bavaria –The Hydrogen Hub is an integral part of the European Hydrogen Backbone, connecting regions with hydrogen demand to numerous potential production regions in Germany and abroad. From 2025, the first pipeline section with a length of 14 kilometres will be commissioned in the Bavarian chemical triangle – followed by further regional project building blocks near Ingolstadt.

The project sets the course for Bavaria’s hydrogen imports, for the diversification of the German hydrogen supply and for the creation of a European hydrogen hub. The project will will transport hydrogen from the import point Burghausen, on the border between Austria and Bavaria, to the gates of Munich, then on to Ingolstadt and further to the north and southwest of Germany. The declared goal is to set up the Bavarian Chemical Triangle as a starting point for ramping up hydrogen in the rest of Bavaria in the near future. The first repurposing, with commissioning planned for the year 2025, is currently being implemented.
