The aim of the project is to establish a regional hydrogen economy in the Rhine-Neckar model region. H2Rivers is providing for the demand for hydrogen with the purchase of 90 passenger cars, 62 buses, 10 industrial trucks, 3 refuse collection vehicles and 2 road maintenance vehicles powered by fuel cells. At the same time, the necessary infrastructure is being built. This includes the construction of a H2 hub in Mannheim, where 400 t of hydrogen per year can be prepared and filled into trailers via a high-performance filling plant at 300 bar or 700 bar. In addition, up to 240 t of hydrogen per year will be produced in Waiblingen in a 2 MW electrolysis plant fed with PV electricity from the local solar park. The green hydrogen will then used by industrial customers and in the transport sector, including in garbage trucks, forklifts and buses. A total of ten partners are involved in the project, coordinated by the Rhein-Neckar GmbH metropolitan region.
The first users of the hydrogen produced include nine buses for local public transport in Waiblingen.
